In 2006, USAID launched the President's Malaria Initiative (PMI), an historic $1.2 billion, five-year expansion of U.S. Government (USG) resources to fight malaria in 15 focus countries in Africa. The PMI is implemented together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other national and international partners. AFM supports the PMI's principles - including more concentrated funding, the use of all available tools, and increased measurement, transparency and accountability.

In 2009, President Obama announced an expanded USG malaria program as part of the Global Health Initiative. The expanded PMI is an Africa-wide program aiming to halve the burden of malaria in 70% of at-risk populations on the continent over the six-year funding period 2009-2014.

USAID also provides support to malaria control efforts in three other non-focus countries in Africa – Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria and Southern Sudan, and to two regional malaria control efforts in the Amazon Basin of South America and the Mekong Delta region of Southeast Asia.
