Research
Malaria control is a work in progress. Various organizations conduct research and development (R&D;) for new insecticides, new drugs and an effective vaccine. In addition to existing malaria control Commodity Manufacturers, these include but are not limited to:
Innovative Vector Control Consortium (IVCC)
Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV)
Malaria Vaccine Initiative (MVI)
Multilateral Initiative on Malaria (MIM)
Global funding for malaria control R&D; was
approximately $323 million in 2004
. This figure has likely increased considerably with contributions from the Gates Foundation. The development of new malaria control tools must be carefully balanced with efforts to save lives with effective tools available today, like Long-Lasting Insecticidal Nets and Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy. Research must also go hand-in-hand with better policies to ensure both existing and new tools reach the poorest and most vulnerable to malaria.
