Regional Initiatives
Increasingly, countries are recognizing the need to work with their neighbors to control malaria. With increased migration of people and given the fact that mosquitoes do not respect political boundaries, regional initiatives will increase in importance. An excellent example of a regional malaria control initiative is the
Lubombo Spatial Development Initiative (LSDI)
. Jointly run by the governments of Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland and with financial assistance from the private sector and the Global Fund, the LSDI has deployed a range of malaria control strategies, including insecticide-treated nets, Artemisinin-based combination therapies and indoor residual spraying. The LSDI has also rigorously monitored its progress and has conducted operational research, some of which can be found on its website.
In September 2008, AFM published a
bulletin
on what makes a malaria control program successful and sustainable by describing the elements of the LSDI.
We encourage you to read more about the LSDI and to explore other regional initiatives described in the articles below.
