What
drugs are used to treat malaria?
|
The
drugs used to treat malaria include quinine, pyrimethamine,
sulfadiazine, chloroquine phosphate and chloroquine sulfate,
mefloquine, and tetracycline. Some malaria-causing parasites
have become resistant to these drugs. Many of these drugs
have significant side effects, also.
"Patients
with P. falciparum malaria also are treated with sponging
and aspirin to lower fever and relieve headache. At the
same time, doctors should watch them closely for potentially
severe complications, including anemia (a blood disorder
created by the extensive destruction of red blood cells);
kidney failure; fluid imbalance; or brain damage (cerebral
malaria) produced when large numbers of red blood cells
containing parasites clog tiny blood vessels in the brain.
The doctor can treat patients with severe complications
with intravenous (directly into the vein) or oral quinine."
